It has been almost three years since Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn into presidency, one of his promises was to promote and protect human rights. Although he has voiced a commitment to human rights reform, Emmerson Mnangagwa and his government have been intolerant of basic rights, peaceful dissent and free expression. Unfortunately the army and the police have committed serious damages including violent attacks, abduction torture, illegal arrests for those who oppose the government.
In January 2019 the security forces has used excessive force to crush national wide protests that had been triggered by Emmerson Mnangagwa's sudden announcement of a fuel price increase. During the protests through out Zimbabwe demonstrators were shot at by live ammunition, killing dozen of people and women being raped. One would say is there any human rights in Zimbabwe? i guess not as long Emmerson and his government are running the show corruption will never end. Under Emmerson's presidency, unsolved cases of abductions and torture of government critics have escalated without the arrest of the abductors.
Zimbabwe constitution provides for human rights framework, to enable millions of Zimbabweans to realize one of the main objectives of the struggle for independence, the enjoyment of human rights and freedom. what is needed is the politicians to carry out the constitution's mandate.If Emmerson Mnanagwa lives up to his promises about human rights and the rule of law, the lives of Zimbabwe people would be much greater. But so far its all empty promises.
